| Is there a more prolific band in Buffalo than the Gifted Children? Not a chance.
On Saturday, the group releases the new EP, “Open Windows,” in concert at Nietzche’s (248 Allen St.). So what’s the big deal, you ask? It’s the group’s third release of this month — and it has already recorded more than 1,300 songs. Earlier in March, the group released “Calvano,” a five-track EP with songs written and recorded by Jeff Suszczynski, who was forced, by bad weather, to stay at his parents’ home. Searching the house, he found some unusual musical ingredients, including wine glasses, seasoning containers and his father’s accordion. Then came “The Reginald Pantry,” a 14-track LP of improvised pieces that were captured live by a handheld digital recorder. The band calls the LP “the soundtrack to an imaginary zombie film and is a pretty significant departure from past efforts. . . . No hooks, no lyrics, just pretty noise.” Now on Saturday we’ll get to hear the seven-track “Open Windows.” And there’s more to come — the band lists another nine releases planned for 2009 on its Web site, www.thegiftedchildren.com . Go there for free downloads of the music. The Gifted Children takes the stage at 10:30 p. m. Saturday in Nietzsche’s, followed by the Stay Lows at 11:30 p. m. and Pennsylvania Gold at 12:30 a. m. | |
